Elder Update - June

Dear Discovery,
Welcome to June! This is the start of our summer season and typically marks a significant transition in our church life.  Families pack up for vacation, students finish final exams, and many in our congregation will graduate from UC Davis and begin the next season of their lives.
This seasonal transition occurs alongside our own leadership transitions and we wanted to take a moment to bring everyone up to speed.  Please have a look at the updates below and, as always, if you have questions, need prayer, or want to share some of the exciting things the Lord is doing in your life, you can reach us at
1) Eldership Update
GR Thompson has been confirmed as an Elder.  As an elder-led congregation this role is critical to the healthy functioning of our church and we are deeply honored to have someone as called and qualified as GR joining our team.

GR and his family are originally from the Midwest and moved to Davis in 2009.  He met his wife Kadee while in medical school and together they have made Davis their home.  They have 3 kids: Elise, Finn and Gwen.  GR works at the UC Davis Medical Center and also has a research laboratory on campus.

GR and his family have attended Discovery since moving to California.  His passion is to ensure those in the church are cared for and to ensure they are in community with others.  He accepted the role as an elder due to a desire to care for and lead the church.  He’s excited to see the growth both in depth and numbers within our church that have occurred over the last 8 years!

If you haven't met GR yet we encourage you to do so - in the words of a fellow Discovery member, GR and his family truly love Jesus, and it shows.  We celebrate GR stepping into this position.
If you would like more information on eldership at Discovery take a look at our position paper here.
2) Pastoral Search Updates
The Pastor Search Committee under Joe Leach is continuing to meet to refine the senior pastor position description and recruitment process.  If you would like to provide input into the process contact and we will direct you accordingly.
As we have walked together through this season the Lord has been revealing many things to us as leaders, helping us see areas of weakness we had not previously seen, ways to grow of which we were unaware, and also drawing out some hidden strengths and gifts from the congregation.  Your staff team, elders, and senior leaders have been working hard to ensure we walk through this season in a healthy, gospel-focused way.  We have come to the conclusion we need some assistance to continue to do this well.

When our former pastor John Richert was called to leave Discovery we originally had not planned on a transition pastor, but over the last few months we have reconsidered this option.  We have noticed some real needs that were not felt or understood before and we have collectively come to the conclusion that a transition pastor, an individual called to help a church bridge the period between senior pastors, would be a great support to our congregation.  We are in the process of discussing this part-time position with a few candidates who have been recommended by our leaders and regional churches and will keep you informed as things unfold.  We anticipate that this position will focus not so much on helping with our teaching/preaching but rather on encouraging, equipping, and supporting our leaders as we pursue the mission of the church.
As always we encourage you to join us in prayer, either privately or at one of our prayer nights, and to continue to seek the Lord as He leads us in our daily mission to meet people where they are and lead them to be disciples of Jesus Christ who make disciples of Jesus Christ.

--Your Elders (Jake, Justin, and Jorge)
