Discovery Church was planted in Davis in 2001 and first gathered for worship in February 2002. Today we continue our commitment to leading you to know and live for Jesus. We carry out our ministry with the conviction that God has a purpose for this church in Davis. And we want you to know He has a purpose for YOU!
Discovery got its beginnings in June 2001 when our founding pastor, Aaron Brockett, and his wife, Lindsay, moved to Davis. Under the guidance and provision of the church planting Northern California Evangelistic Association (now Stadia), Aaron and Lindsay began building relationships and first gathered a group for worship on February 22, 2002. For the first year of our existence, we gathered on Sunday morning in the Stadium 5 movie theater on G Street, where worship was filled with the smells of popcorn! The goal was to love people one at a time, and that remains an important value in Discovery today.
In year two we moved our Sunday gatherings to the Veterans Memorial Theater across from the Davis High School. After meeting there for three years and continuing to grow our church leadership, we were invited to meet in the brand new Davis High performing arts theater. We have spent our Sunday mornings there ever since. In January 2012 we opened our Downtown Ministry Center so that we could better serve our city.
After four years in Discovery, our founding pastor and his family moved back to the midwest, and Discovery went through a leadership transition under the guidance of our first Elder Team. After serving as Associate Pastor for one year and completing his PhD at UC Davis, John Richert was called to lead us forward. In 2017, after 10 years of faithful service God called John and his family out.
Today we have grown as a community of Christ-followers in the center of our city equipping generations of servants and leaders. In addition to those of us who call Davis home, people come from all over the region, nation and world to spend a few years at Davis. Whether they are here for one week, one month, one year or five, we hope to welcome them into our Discovery family and equip them for life. We continue to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ, teach the Bible, love people, and serve our city. Our passions for building up strong and Christ-centered families as well as generations of servants and leaders have continued to grow along with the ministries that accomplish these goals. Whether in our Sunday theater, our Downtown location, or in homes throughout Davis and Woodland, we do all we do to the honor of Jesus’ name. And we are glad that YOU may be part of God’s story in Discovery!
