But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. I Peter 2:9

Many times when we hear the word holy we think: good, morally upright, people who don’t do bad stuff, or various other things along these lines.

But did you know all it really means is “different”?

Literally: different. 

The deeper connotation means “dedicated to.”

These days there are many things competing for our time and attention and energy, which raises some questions for us: What are you dedicated to? What is pursuing you for your time and attention?

As we get ready for the fall, this is going to be a weird one, just like everything else this year! So, I hope this is a good reminder for us: you are different, holy, royal, chosen, special!

Which is good news for us, and for our world (check out the second part of that verse: “that you may declare”).

This is the journey that lies ahead for us: what does it mean to be different, counter cultural, dedicated to God’s kingdom, and his mission in our broken world?
